What is a pressure gauge?

A pressure gauge is a measuring instrument used to measure the pressure of a specific medium in a closed space relative to atmospheric pressure. Air pressure and water pressure for example, are often measured using a pressure gauge or manometer. There are different types of pressure gauges that can be used in various conditions to measure pressure differences, overpressure or underpressure. These measurements are crucial because pressure differences, overpressure, or underpressure can potentially cause damage. This results not only in high costs but can also be dangerous in certain situations. Therefore, a reliable measuring instrument (a pressure gauge) is essential.

How does a pressure gauge work?

The primary purpose of a pressure gauge is to monitor the pressure in a specific medium relative to atmospheric pressure. If the pressure remains constant, the mechanism will stay balanced and it will not deform. When pressure increases, the needle on the display will start to move. When pressure decreases, it will also move but in the opposite direction. The two most commonly used types of manometers are the Bourdon tube manometer and the diaphragm manometer. Each of them operates differently and serves different purposes. This page explains in detail how a manometer works.

Units of measurement for a pressure gauge

In the SI system, the standard unit of pressure is the Pascal, but it’s a very small unit. It is not practical for measuring pressure in most media because the numbers get very large. Therefore, different pressure units are used in measuring instruments:

  • In Western Europe, the standard pressure unit is the Bar.
  • In the United States and Canada, Psi (Pounds per square inch) is common.
  • In Australia, kPa (kilo Pascal) is used.
  • In India and Korea, kg/cm² is used.

At EMVO Techniek, analog pressure gauges typically come with a scale in bar or millibar, depending on the range. If you need a different pressure unit or want two pressure units on one manometer, we can customize the instrument to your requirements. Another option is a digital pressure gauge that can display pressure in various units.

How to read a pressure gauge

The basic function of a pressure gauge is to display the pressure in the measured medium, and it is easy to read. In an analog model, the current pressure is indicated by a (black) needle that moves across a scale in a specific pressure unit. A digital manometer features a digital screen that displays the current pressure in numbers. Sometimes, you can read additional data on a pressure gauge, such as the highest pressure recorded since the last reset. A digital pressure gauge offers more options, including a bar graphic depicting pressure changes over a certain period. To make reading easier, some pressure gauges have an adjustable viewing angle or backlighting.
