In addition the resistance oil prevents condensation, it lubricates the mechanism and the accuracy is increased. Therefore the use of hydraulic pressure gauges often takes place in workshop presses, blasting cabins and do it yourself projects.

How does a hydraulic pressure gauge work?

Most hydraulic pressure gauges work according to the Bourdon tube principle. This technology is based on a small, flattened tube that is usually C-shaped, but can also come in a spiral form. The bottom end of the tube is connected to a pipe that lets the medium to be measured flow into the tube, while the other end is closed. When pressure inside the tube increases, the flatness of the C will decrease. The tube will gain a rounder form which will cause it to become straighter. The closed end of the Bourdon tube will start to move and set in motion a mechanism containing a set of pivots and gears. Those gears amplify this movement and transfer it to the pointer in the display, so that it will start to move over a calibrated circular scale. When pressure decreases, the tube regains its original form and the indicator needle will also move backwards.

This method is known to be used since the nineteenth century and has proven to be simple but very accurate. Other pressure gauge types are diaphragm pressure gauges or bellow gauges.
