How does an analog thermometer work?

Analog thermometersAnalog thermometers are based on several different working principles. The mercury thermometer is the most commonly known thermometer. Mercury is a liquid metal that expands when exposed to warmth. Nowadays, coloured alcohol is used in liquid thermometers. Alcohol also expands but is less dangerous in case the container breaks.

A bimetal thermometer uses metal strips with different expansion coefficients, which are welded or brazed together. In case of a temperature change, the metal will deform. A connected mechanism will cause the indicator needle in the display to move.

A Thermo-hygrometer can measure temperature as well as humidity at the same time. There are several circumstances in which humidity and temperature play an equal part in a process or environment. In saunas for example, but also in certain (food) industry processes.

Graduation in analog thermometers

In the Netherlands and Belgium, analog thermometers usually indicate temperature values in Celsius (°C), but of course it is possible to measure temperature using another unit, such as Fahrenheit (F) or Kelvin (K). EMVO Technieks’s thermometers are completely adjustable to your needs!

Kelvin, Fahrenheit or Celsius

Kelvin is commonly used in science to indicate temperature values. It is a so-called SI-unit, which means that it is used in the international system. It is known and used all over the world, whilst Celsius and Fahrenheit are limited to certain parts of the world. Fahrenheit for example is used in the US, while Celsius is the common unit in Europe.

Kelvin also has an absolute zero. In Celsius that would be -273,15 °C, and it means that it can never be any colder than that.
